The first floor of the Library of Birmingham has been transformed from an open plan area into 20 classrooms, a collaboration zone, new toilets, and also a staff kitchenette.
The mechanical element of the revamp involved the installation of passive chilled beams served by re-configured pipe work from existing services. Air Cool have also installed variable air volume boxes served by re-configured duct work from existing ventilation services. For fire protection to the new layout, new sprinkler heads were installed and thus existing ones relocated accordingly.
All the mechanical services have been designed and then installed with a new control strategy to co-exist with the original system serving the rest of the building. This provides a comfortable, temperature controlled, and acoustically suitable environment which is therefore ideal for learning.
